Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Repair
The type of CDH repair, material used and timing of the surgery is
different for each baby. Most hospitals have their own CDH
care guidelines so it is important to work with your child's medical
care providers as a team and stay informed of their options and
procedures.
There are several different types of surgical repair of
CDH. Below is a description of each. It is
posted for informational purposes only. CHERUBS does not
recommend any specific CDH treatment. Every baby is
different - discuss the different options with your child's pediatric
surgeon and make the best decision based on his / her medical
information.
Primary Repair - surgical repair involving using only diaphragm muscle available and closing the hole with sutures.
Mesh Repair - there are several different types of synthetic materials available to use:
Gore-Tex (polytetrafluoroethylene)
Marlex (polypropylene)
Lyophilized Dura
Surgisis
Small Intestinal Submucosa
Reversed latissimus dorsi muscle flap
The SIS extracellular matrix scaffold
The type of CDH repair is very important to avoid
reherniation. Each baby's hernia is different and one type
of repair may be suitable or not for each hernia or
reherniation. Below is data taken from our membership:
